Episode 10: Kiran Gupta
Kiran Gupta grew up in Fairfield, California where he studied Pop and Classical piano. He learned to play Jazz by playing trumpet in community, middle and high school bands. After high school, he attended U.C.L.A. where he received a B. A. in Ethnomusicology with an emphasis on World Music. During undergraduate school, he formed an Indian Classical and Jazz Fusion band which melded the two styles of improvisation during performance. After serving two years as a coach/teacher to his former high school music program, he was accepted to N.Y.U.’s Graduate Music Theater Writing Program along with 37 others. It was there that he formed a partnership with lyricist and drummer Ashley Chapman with whom he later moved to Nashville to write songs.
In Nashville, he has taken up the Hammond organ and has formed bands such as Pussycat Doghouse and his organ trio with guitarist, Val Lupescu and drummer, Daniel Cox. He has also recently toured with guitarist and Blues musician, Meg Williams. Kiran can be found on Facebook and on Instagram as mr.kiran.gupta.
