Purpose
Johnathan Smith is on top of the world! In his own words he’s “excited to wake up” every day. At 31 he’s very much in his prime, having spent the last 20 years learning piano while playing Gospel in his mother’s church and commercial music in local West Virginia bands. He moved to Nashville two years ago and says meaningful conversations have guided him to his Nashville family. That family consists of his girlfriend, many musician friends and a church that has embraced and supported him.
In January of this year, Johnathan was playing in a band he helped form called The Network when Hunter Hayes heard the group and hired them for his road band. The experience has obviously been wonderful for Johnathan as he describes their shows as organic and evolving. So often, a regular gig offers players security and a framework for musical improvement, but where there is respect and freedom, people can really thrive. Touring the world with Hunter Hayes has changed Johnathan’s life for the better, giving him both solid chops and plenty of time to dream.
Recently, after attending a concert at City Winery featuring pianist Robert Glasper, Johnathan knew he wanted to release an EP and have a side solo career. He announced those plans on this very podcast! I’m thrilled to be a vehicle to help spread the news that he is finding his voice. I also love how he summed up his two years in Nashville: Learn, Get Active, Fulfill The Dream, and Find Purpose.
“We need more of people being who they are,” was one of the first statements Johnathan made as we sat down together and it’s exactly what he’s doing. Be sure to follow the Confessions Of A Keyboardist Facebook page or any of Johnathan’s social media for information concerning his upcoming solo project. Congratulations, Johnathan!
